Does anybody use teflon tape or ??? to seal the threads of a suspected leaking oil sender? Or does that mess with the grounding effect (if there is one?)

You do need metal-to-metal contact at the threaded junction. They don't tend to leak through the threads, they tend to leak through the (blown) sender itself!
