Just got back from US41, and boy am I happy! With no modifications from last week except for the weather, my Slantzilla motor went from 15-teens@88 to 14:84@90. The wether was about 10 degrees cooler than last week at RT66, and the humidity was about 10 points lower. Unfortunately, I think the thing now wants more jet because it slowed down in the first round when the motor had cooled down. I had my friend Laura Bowersox welded to the tree, but she ran the same margin closer to her dial for a margin of victory of .000. I should have bought back in, but I was so happy I just came home. Thanks for the horsepower Mike and Blaine!

Boy that combo just seems to keep getting better. What kind of goals did you have in mind for this motor when you first put it in? I assume that you have surpassed them.

Tom, yes, the combo seems to be getting stronger all the time. (I have done nothing to the original long block, only external bolt-on stuff) When I originally built this thing I thought I could get it into the 14's in my Duster, but now that it is in my '66 I made it. I really think that if I'd stayed last night and put more jet in it I could have gotten down into the 14:60's. I wanted to get it into the 14's before I put my bottle on, but now I think that if I put a bigger carb, more cam, and my 3.91 gears in I can make the 13's without spray. It never ends, does it? Dennis:
Did you ever post a breakdown of your build-up? I must have missed it. We too are expecting mid-14 sec times in a 4dr 68 Val and based on what we have seen so far, we fully expect to get there.
Thanks
Smith

Yeah, you've got my attention, too. I'am kinda new to this forum, so I am unaware how you got to this stage. Can you synopsize what you did, and in what order, and critique how successful each step was?

Here is the original setup. <A HREF="http://www.slantsix.com/UBB/Forum16/HTM ... 07.html</A> Since then, the motor/trans has been put in a '66 Valiant 2 door post car. I have also added an Offy intake and a 390 Holley, worth .5 and 4 mph over a Super Six setup, a 3000 stall converter, and it now has 3.55 gears behind it instead of 3.91's.

Since I put it into the '66, I have discovered that the motor was running with only 24* total timing. I have bumped it up to 34*

I added a 1" spacer under the carb. Worth a tenth.

I put a Summit exhaust dump in the exhaust system. That has been worth about .15 and 1mph.

Put the '72 Demon scoop off the Duster on. It's not sealed to the hood, but still seems to be working.

From the first day I ran this motor to last week, I was doing these 4 things 1 week at a time. The result was that even though the weather was getting worse, the car was not slowing down. Then, last night when we had some decent weather, it picked up .3 and 2 mph. Later! Dennis

Your set-up sounds just a little milder than mine, mostly cam, TC and intake/carb. If you hit mid 14's in an early A body, we should be able to match that in a '68 4 dr A body. Looks like you did a real good job.

Any idea on top ring gap used on the KB pistons? See my post above for the problems we have had. Like I said above, the car really pulls all the way up through the rpm range. The cam is much more aggressive than yours, with over 0.500" lift on both I and E and durations of 230°/240° @ 0.050", but still will drive around @ 1,500-1,750 with no problems.
Thanks
Smith

Smith, mine are gapped at .022". I have had no problems yet. I'm at 34* total now and run 87 octane most of the time, 91-93 when I race. Dennis
