Soft engine mounts can also cause this

Check the reverse band adjustment. May be that or a reverse servo sticking in the bore and then releasing all at once.

Hi there,

Can anyone tell me what is "reverse band" and how to adjust it?

Thank in advance!

A reverse band is located inside the transmission at it's rear. It is used to apply the low/reverse drum and is adjusted after the pan has been removed by loosening the lock nut and rotating the threaded stud, thereby tightening or loosening the band.

After changing rear ends from 8.25 to 8.75 and having the drive line cut to size, my 71 Demon developed a clunk going into reverse. It turned out that I had measured the drive line to short which left the yoke sitting outside the tranny to far. At this point I believe the clunk came from the wobble effect of the yoke not being properly seated into the tranny. Upon having the drive shaft cut to a more precise size, the clunk went away. Measuring the drive shaft to it has an exact 3/4 inch tolerance to the rear end is key.

Neither of mine go clunk when I shift into reverse. Should I be worried?
