Hello Im new to this site so bear with me, ok to start with I have a 1980 Dodge Diplomat S6 A4 tranny, and a holley 1945 carb, I just reran all vacuum lines acoording to the vacuum diagram, I must say everything was backwards, this problem has been ongoing since I bought it, when I start it and engine is still cold, I rev the engine while in Park, it revs fine at 1/2 throttle, but when I stomp down on the accelerator it sputters, and dies, when its warm it still hesitates but it doesn't die...Also the *air pump has been disconnected, not sure what was disconnected when they did it previous owner did it... Any Help or Suggestions would be appreciated Thanks!

It sounds like the mixture is going lean at WOT.
Do you still have to get by a smog check?
If not, richen-up the carb with a bigger main jet.

I pulled the plugs right after it died at WOT and they were black, so Im thinking that the choke isnt opening properly when you open the throttle... I have a question when the engine is cold, and you open the throttle fully how far is the choke supposed to open? Ill have to test it to see if the choke is still not opening after warm... any thought? thanks

If the choke is not opening the engine will miss and sputter with lots of black smoke before it dies.
You can check to see if the choke's vacuum pull-off pod is working, this should open the choke flap about 1/3 the way once the engine starts cold.

ok I checked the choke it is working properly... I suspect I just need new plugs, been 6 months since I replaced em.... but something else... when revving the engine I shut the choke some and the sputtering went away so Im thinking Im running a bit lean, first Ill clean the carb and main and hope it clears it out... Also do lean mixtures cause backfiring through the carb? it was backfiring through the carb when I had the air cleaner off...

Sounds lean. Throw a bigger jet at it, and check that your float level is set to specs.

Since it fails at WOT maybe you should check the action of the accelerator pump also. Should be a steady stream of fuel going in when you work the accel. pump manually.

Sorry to bring up another possibility, but...burnt intake valves?

it could be burnt valves I changed the head gasket about 6 months ago... the valves appeared to be seating properly then... Also I changed the plugs and coil 2 day and every1 one of em was oil fouled...kind of odd b4 I changed the head gasket the plugs were white and dry when I would change em. The problem was a little better but still at WOT its just like a dead spot... accelerator pump seems to be working properly, and I reset the float when I cleaned it...also where is the main jet...? its a holley 1945 carb...and where would I get jets for it? Thanks guys

The mains should be at the bottom of the float chamber, I've never looked at that particular Holley, but I believe it has a power valve also, which looks like a jet from the top.
I called Holley, number on their website www.holley.com, to ask for the nearest Holley dealer here in Colorado Springs.
I got a set of new main jets for my 390 cfm 4-bbl, 3 sizes smaller, for $5. Check the speed shops.
You can bet that a 1980 auto is very lean from the factory. Bumping the jet up can't be a bad thing in any event.

A rule I learned working on old British cars probably works everywhere: BLAME THE CARB LAST.

Good luck. I installed my 390 cfm 4 bbl (Clifford intake and header) tonight but won't try to start it until tomorrow. Didn't want to be up all night if something was wrong!

I'm guessing...Grand Junction?
If you have problems with the jets, I can get them for you from the local speed shop. Just let me know.
