Hi group,

Sorry for the Newbie question. Any tips on pulling the engine out of a Valiant with an automatic transmission? I have got all the bolts out and mounts are loose. I was going to ask about the torque converter, but I watched a video, so that question was answered. Any tips? I was planning on bolting a chain to a front and back head bolt hole, and lifting with the forks on my kubota loader. No engine hoist available, and wouldn't do well anyway cause the car is in the field. Here is were I am at so far.

I think I may have a problem getting the torque converter off. With a seized engine, how does one get all the bolts off the flywheel/torque converter?

Can I reuse the steel head and manifold gaskets?

Also, There are a number of other parts available. It's not my car, but is being parted out. I could pull and ship if it is economical for the buyer. I have posted pictures in the parts for sale folder.

This may be possible (I did it with a old Mazda)..........

Unbolt the tranny mount, the K member, suspension and anything else connected to the body.

Lift the front of the body up enough to have easy access............

There are two 3/8 -16 unc threaded holes in the top of the cylinder head that are used to lift the engine or engine / transmission, as an assembly.
Use a strap between the two mounting points, when pulling the engine and transmission together. Use just the front mounting point when pulling the engine alone.
You will have to pull-off the hood if using your tractor as a crane.

I always try to pull all the flex plate to converter bolts, even on "stuck" engines. (you only need a half a turn)
Try using a big breaker bar on a bolt installed in the front of the crankshaft to get rotation needed to get all the bolts out.
The other option is to pull the converter out of the trans when the engine separates from the trans... and dump ATF on the ground.

Hi Doug, thanks for the info. I had to remove the head to get at the bell housing bolts. I guess I could put the head back on. I don't want to turn the engine over. From the looks of things, it may have been swamped with mud. Lots of caked on mud all over it. And some dried powder/mud in one of the cylinder bores. No dipstick so I have no idea if there is even oil in the pan. So I don't want to dislodge anything, causing scratches in the crank. Also I can't even remove the lifters, they seem to be stuck in place. So I think best bet to pull the torque converter with the engine. Separate it off after removing oil pan and maybe disconnecting connecting rods. Is there any reason why I cannot take out the complete crankshaft with the torque converter still attached, then remove it from the flex plate out of the block?

You can easily get to all the bolts once the trans moves away from the engine.
The biggest concern is bending the flex plate as everything separates.
