I've always drizzled STP/MotorHoney into the pump, NOT full, but enough to fully cover the entire interior plus a bit. Making sure to hand turn normal rotation while adding thru' the inlet, then reversing the rotation when I've stopped adding 'til it is starting to push the lube back up the inlet. The pump will pull like a septic pumper when cranked. I try to avoid over- priming, and put assy lube on everything that touches anything, if the pressure comes up & out with 2 rolls of the crank by hand max You're good & done. As per Rob, if the situation allows, I put cam-lube on last..

A few weeks ago I rebuilt a Toyota engine and forgot to "prime" the pump. I cut part of the oil filter away and gutted it, then screwed it on and filled it with oil. The oil disappeared, I assume as the filter was a couple inches from the pump that oil flowed into the pump. The FSM didn't say that I should be concerned about any of this.
