Well i got my slant running today. Ignition switch was working fine. When i first got the car it was doing what its doing now...no cranking - pegging the ammeter. i fiddled around witha few things and it worked, didnt think much of it...worked all afternoon. And now i have nothing again.

Key on pegs the ammeter and i can hear almost like a spark in the column. I pulled the steering wheel and i cant see any signs of something going wrong in there...what can i do to troubleshoot this?

Thanks

if it pegs the ammeter sure it's a big mean assed short... check your wiring under the dash and into the engine bay (especially the alternator and voltage regulator area.... i compressed the VR hot wire one time and I melted some wires  )

Does your battery positive cable goes straight to the starter like it is supposed to?

You know, if your engine had either no or a very poor ground, when you cranked you'd float the engine at near battery voltage - then the current would take any & every path including through the ammeter open to it. That current probably wouldn't be close to turning the starter, but could damage lots of things along the way.
