What if any motors come close to the /6 for toughness? I have 2 picks.
The straight 6 from Jeep. It is a AMC design but its a good performer and durable and easy to work on. It comes real close to the /6.

Ford had a straight 6, a 300 C.I.D monster. This is thought of only as a truck/Van motor. It is super tough. But i think you could get this for mabey 2 years (69,70?) in a real stripped down Galaxie/LTD.
Thes are the only 2 that comes close that I can think of.

I think you'd just have to leave it up to the various 'pro/con' of each one as they all have some strengths, and all have certain weaknesses...

Your Competition list should be:
Ford 250/300
Chevy 250
AMC/Jeep 242/4.0L

You could add a few others if you went outside the "Inline 6" realm...but each has it's own peculiarities...

I didn't mention the chevy and ford 250 Straight 6 because i didn't think they were in the same ball park as the /6.
But it seems the Jeep 4.0 comes close to being as "good" as the /6.
And the V6's are a totally different animal. i'm just referring to straight 6's.

I didn't mention the rice motors because though some of them are very good, most of them are newer fuel injection type and I would put them under a different classifacation then the American motors which were all designed in the 60's.

I was thinking of the older Land Cruisers..............

The original came out in 58; F135 @ 236.7cuin then there was a F155 at same displacement in 71. Used until 1974 when replaced by 2F (improvement of F engines)engine @ 257.9cuin (used till 87), then 3F (88-92) then forget it after 93 as it's a whole new engine family......

So I'd say the F135's & F155's count, and maybe the 2F (with an outside possibility of 3F)

Ed

I stand corrected....but I think that motor would be in a different class, the American motors are much more plentiful and the parts are still easily avaiable and CHEAP.

And it was a production motor, not a custom or one-off...

Things that determine the "goodness" of an inline 6:

7 main bearings, forged crank/rods, timing gears, 12 port head, EFI potential, breathing, displacement potential, trans availability

The 300 Ford has all of these.#1 ! (imagine a 340" EFI 5 speed in a Fairmont wagon....it all bolts up.)

The AMC comes a very close second...(only 2nd on displacement has all the rest) EFI 4.0 5 speed in a Spirit AWD

Pontiac OHC....no EFI....funky belt

Chev 6 is Fourth because of siamesed intake ports.(Does have lots of trans possibility)

Toyota is next only because it is a Japanese Chev 6. and has less dispacement(no 292)

slant six ( 5 mains , chain drive cam, oil pump woes, small displacement)....but they came in a way better car than the others with mebbe the exception of some AMCs(Spirit AWD, Gremlin)

I had a 61 Falcon Coupe with C4/convertor, 305" Ford 6, Offy 600 Holley, Crane Cam, Clifford Headers. 8" rear with gears. Im sorry but no slant in the same tune would touch it. It bent the car.

Do you know what cars the Ford 300 came in? i think its size (length) would be a problem except on full size cars? I'm a bolt-on car guy, the reason I like the /6. There aren't to many cars with the AMC 4.0 . I know there are plenty of jeeps, but in the newer ones they are realy jammed in the engine compartments.

Do you know which cars had the Ford 300 in it?

The 240/300 was a split motor....cars got the 240 yechh!,,,and trucks got the 300.

The 240s came in about 66-70 big Fords, I built mine using a 240 out of a 66 Galaxie taxi. I then ordered the "Select" forged 300 crank and rods they used in garbage trucks,,,,BIG garbage trucks. I also used 4.030 Chev V8 pistons to get 11 to 1 CR....FE series Valve gear. I used the garbage truck oiling system....a Pinto torque convertor and V8 C4...I never broke anything on that car,,,daily driver, low 13s in 1975. A similar setup owned the NHRA H/MP record at 11.28.

Now I would add a 5.0L Mustang EFI setup and a 5 speed. Yikes......and get rid of that Pinto 'vertor.

Bruce Sizemore owned the H/MP record for years. Wasn't his Ford Maverick named 'Preparation H'?

I saw a Holman-Moody intake for a 300 Ford at the Turkey Rod Run in Daytona a few years back, the HyperPak looks mild in it's appearence compared to it.

So you're saying If i had a 67 Mustang with a 240 6 in it I can replace it with a 300 and it will pretty much "bolt in"?

Yes, IF it had a 240 in it, a 300 would bolt right in.
If a 240 is there, someone put(shoehorned) it in.
Mustang got the smaller 200 and 250 motor.

small6 series;
144
170
200
250
big6 series;
240
300
