I just got the 170 "w" super 6 intake running a few days ago, parked it till I have more time this weekend.

I noticed it had autolite 45 plugs. They were using the squash ring that comes with the plug. It has drool tubes and I thought I read a post where someone stated,== Throw away the squish ring if you have the drool tube heads.

Throw it away, Is that tryed and true?

How about autolite 45's. Correct plug.? G/6

Autolite 985s are better...........

What year is the engine?

Early engines used the ring and the tube, later engines just the tube.

What do you consider later?

Is the 985 the extended tip?

'60-'62 heads: Use the crush washers.
'63-'74 heads: Remove and discard the crush washers.

Autolite 45s aren't right. Use NGK #ZFR5N; long extended tip, correct heat range, and significantly better quality than Autolite (which in turn is considerably better quality than Champion).

Because '60-'62 heads don't have the right counterbore that puts the plugs in the right place without the crush washers. This was a change made at the start of '63 model production. See here .

OK, whatever you say. The factory went to a great deal of trouble to publish a great deal of paper showing the difference in cylinder head casting, explicitly calling for the use of the washers in '60-'62 heads and not in '63-'74 heads, but I guess your "BULLPUCKY!" opinion carries more weight than a stupid bunch of engineers.

How 'bout those same dumbcluck engineers having changed the connecting rod oil squirt hole location for '63, and publishing a similar volume of paper explaining that on '60-'62 engines the hole has to face one direction, and on '63 up engines it has to face the other direction? Can we get your expert assessment of the BULLPUCKY! factor on that one?

I can't remember if I used the rings or not when I change mine. If they have rings attached I would have used them.

That's exactly why "Blah blah I'm gonna take 'em off because the factory engineers were full of bullpucky blah blah" is silly: It takes more work for the owner of a '60-'62 head to do it wrong (remove the washers) than to do it right (leave 'em on), because many spark plugs available today (NGKs, for example) have the washers attached such that you have to do some actual work to remove them. It's worth removing them on a '63-'74 head to make sure the plug's in the right position and doesn't run hotter than it oughtter.

If you do it wrong (use the washers on a '63+ head, omit them on a '60-'62 head), the car won't lurch to a halt and the engine won't blow up, but for such a minor amount of effort, it's worth doing it right.

After doing some checking,MY stamped, SPECIAL ,head for the aluminum block,is the same as 63 later heads,as far as spark plug holes go,So ALL 60-62 heads are not created exual,,bulletin doesnt meantion the SPECIAL head, they are different.so i still call bullpucky for my car, mark

And the squirt holes on aluminum block rods are supposed to be pointing the other way, compared to a 60,61,62 iron block motors,I am sure you knew this from THE bulletins, plus the fact that the SPECIAL head was the same as the 63ish head as for the spark plug holes.Rings removed, runs perfect,Mark
